Summary: "Off to a good start"
The author has done a good job with the story line, having multiple story lines and characters within the main story. This could possibly be a "after school tv special" showing a strong message to teenagers. Also a great teaching lesson for a high school literature teacher. The book is easy reading, and keeps the reader interested. The author is able to show how a Mom and Dad deal with this tradegy. The tradegy taking you into different worlds, and back out again. The author paints this story in a very believeable fashion.

Summary: "In Review..."
So far the hardest part about this whole process has been when people ask, "what's it about." Honestly, I lock up; my lips flip, my shoulders bound around, my eyes spin in their sockets hoping to latch on to some little bit of anything interesting to respond with. Most recently, someone asked the "dreaded question" and I replied very dryly with "peer pressure." I guess, really, it's hard for me to sum it all up, not because there's so much, but because to me, it's not truly about one thing or one person. The Root Beer Kid is a composite about, yes, peer pressure, contrast, falling apart, rebuilding, grieving, remembering, struggling and most of all hope in regards to the life of this family torn. Even after something so tragic, so devastating sucks the life out of you, there's hope, that's how I'd like The Root Beer Kid to be remembered. But, to most people, The Root Beer Kid is about Jerry Elder and his battle with instability after his older brother dies in a car wreck. Jerry is a high school freshman and he's looking forward to school and hoping to put all of this anguish out of his conscience. And, regretfully, he finds a cure for his illness. Yes, some graphic drug use ensues, I must stress that point, as it seems the novel has always been pushed toward a young adult audience, I want it to be known that this is a battle for the character and a major story point. No, it does not glorify drug use and often Jerry feels ashamed for his actions. The story also weaves around his parents. Due to the overwhelming nature of losing a son, they seem to be unable to pull together, and eventually the odds catch up with them. The father, Larry falls into the abysmal void of alcoholism and mom is left with empty cartons of tissue. As we travel along with their story we see their hearts unravel and how much more difficult it is to deal with the death alone. All in all, my ultimate goal was to keep it entertaining. There is plenty of moral fiber throughout, but nothing that is ostentatious. And, there are a few bit characters that will keep the mood light, the story interesting and most importantly fun. In closing, I hope that you decide to give The Root Beer Kid and myself a shot at keeping your fascination on a Saturday afternoon and please drop by www.cbjproductions.com and tell me what you thought.
Thanks. Chuck Bohatka Jr.
